Politics & Society
Kilmartin Educational Services offers several subjects as an external subject. Kilmartin Educational Services has been offering submission of project coursework supervision since 2002. We currently offer Economics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Geography, Agricultural Science and Politics and Society.
Note: Kilmartin Educational Services both teaches the course and the Project. The actual examination must be sat at their own school.
Politics and Society: There is a project component representing 20% of the Leaving Certificate marks. The project is usually announced after Christmas in 5th year and is to be completed by April of 6th year.
As is our current practice, coursework must be conducted under the supervision of the class teacher. The project can be done in groups or individually. Students are expected to work independently and involve themselves in some aspect of citizenship. The teacher monitors the progress of all aspects of Practical Coursework periodically. This is to verify that the work is the candidate’s own individual work and to guarantee student equity.
The project is submitted by SEC portal on an MS Word file provided by the SEC. Word count must be strictly adhered to. The student will get login details from their school when they are registered for the exam subject. This is to ensure not only compliance with government guidance, but also total fairness for all students.
Attendance is essential. Non-compliance with Kilmartin Educational Services stipulations will force Kilmartin Educational Services not to sign off on Project component of the examination.

Politics and Society is one of the newest subjects added to the Leaving Certificate curriculum and has proven to be very popular in schools that have taken it on. The course consists of:
1. Citizenship Project worth 20% of the course (Group project is recommended but it can be done individually on condition that a good reason is given)
2. Exam paper worth 80% of the course. The exam paper is broken into three sections:
A) Short Questions (Answer 10 of 12) *
B) Data Question (Medium length, analysis-based questions with a mini-essay)
C) Essay Questions (Answer 2 from 4) **
This subject is particularly useful to students wishing to pursue a career in Politics & Political Science, Government, Law, European Studies, Human Rights, Sociology, Journalism, Teaching, Arts & Humanities, Social Studies, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy.
Requirements:
This subject is unlike any other subject on the Leaving Cert curriculum. It is not a subject where one can rote-learn from a book or notes and regurgitate them on an exam day. Students must be willing to work independently as the exam paper is designed to reward those who think critically. Critical thinking consists of engaging in debate, conversation, expressing views, willing to change one's views when presented with a counter argument, reading, thinking time. Whereas some material and guidance will be provided it is, ultimately, up to the individual student to research and create a lot of their own material.
